MIKE HEARN
Desert Cycle Namibia seeks to continue Mike Hearn's critically important work with Save the Rhino Trust (SRT) in preserving a beautiful corner of Africa. Saving the Rhino means saving every other species, the landscape and supporting the tribal communities living there.

Man of Science: Mike's 12 years of work on the desert adapted rhino, a rare subspecies of the black rhino, were providing vital information for the management & preservation of this desert species (which was coming together in his PhD). His scientific expertise was widely recognised: he was on the African Rhino Specialist Group. But it was his charisma, dynamism and likeability that cut through the divide between counter posed opinions of NGOs, Local government & National Government. He was a true diplomat and in this arena did almost more for conservation, than through his scientific studies.

Man of Tribal Communities: We lost a man of immense humility - he lived among the community and learned much from the African SRT trackers, with whom he worked as a very young man, when he first came to Namibia. He became one of them and was loved as such. His heart and soul is in the red rocks of the basalt hills where the rhino roam, as much as among the Damara, Himba & Herero tribespeople. The respect and love, between him and they, were equal. 'Truly multicultural' as one Damara friend described him.
